The Textile Design Competition 2012

9th March 2012

The Shrewsbury Drapers Company has held a Textile Design Competition for the past 16 years. The competition is open to all residents of Shropshire aged 16 and over, providing they are either students or of amateur status. Shropshire students who are at college in the UK outside Shropshire can also enter. This year will focus on the theme

“SIXTY GLORIOUS YEARS”.

Competition Guidelines

The competition is to design and create an original piece of textile work which must incorporate some wool. Other materials and fabrics can be incorporated int the work, as can decorative needlework, collage etc.

This year the work must relate to the theme “Sixty Glorious Years”.

The finished work may be of any size subject to a maximum of 1 metre x 1.5 metres, unless the entry is a garment.

Size alone is not a judging criterion.

When judging, the following aspects will be taken into consideration:

  1. Interpretation of theme
  2. Design, technique, workmanship and finish
  3. Tone and colour and their use and interest.

Exhibits should be delivered ready for hanging or display with suitable hooks and wires and specific mounting instructions if necessary.

A title and brief written description of 10 words should accompany the entry on the entry form which should simply give your registration number but not your name.

Only amateurs may enter, being defined as those who do not earn a living from selling or teaching in the field of Textiles, Art or Design Technology. The judges reserve the right to decline to accept an entry where amateur status is in doubt.

The prizes will total £1200 and consist of 2 x Gold Awards (one being The Susan Auster Gold Award for students aged over 16 and under 21 on 1 September 2010); 2 x Silver Awards (one similarly restricted by age); and 6 x Bronze Awards, 2 of which are reserved for students aged 16 – 20.

The competition is open to all residents in Shropshire aged 16 years and over on 1 September 2012, and students from Shropshire in higher education in the U.K.

Registration for entry should be on the downloadable form above, to be submitted as soon as possible and no later than 30th April 2012.

The work should be completed and submitted on Saturday 15th September 2012 between 10am and 1pm to St Mary`s Church in Shrewsbury..

The Awards Ceremony will be on the evening of Tuesday 18th September 2012, followed by a public exhibition of all entries until Friday 28th September 2012.
