2019 Carol Concert and Lunch

Carol Service 2019

Reverend Richard Hayes officiated at the annual Shrewsbury Drapers’ Carol Service at St Alkmund’s on Sunday 15 December. The singing was augmented by a “pop up” choir of Drapers. Brian Newman led and conducted the choir in a performance of Silent Night and Rejoice and be Merry, greatly enjoyed by the assembled Drapers and guests. Our thanks to William Smallman who came to our aide in playing the organ and accompanying the choir.

Reverend Richard Hayes provided the service with a most enjoyable and thought provoking twist by reading Christmas Day 1659 by Sir Matthew Hale.

Eric, an alms house resident joined us for lunch after reading a passage from the prophet Isaiah. Eric looked splendid in his Scottish national dress, complete with a fake sgian-dubh.

Thank you to the church wardens of St Alkmund’s, Caroline Thewles and Andrew Cross, for decorating the church so beautifully and making it so warm and welcoming.

The walk from St Alkmund’s to Drapers Hall was swiftly achieved in between showers and we were welcomed by restaurant staff with Christmas greetings and a glass of wine.

Our guests, Deputy Mayor Councillor Gwen Burgess, Consort Mark Wellings and Wing Commander Clare Harrison, RAF Shawbury, were welcomed by Master Tom Taylor. Clare is also the RAF Governor of Thomas Adams School, Wem which is supported by the London Drapers.

We were well fed and watered by the staff at Drapers’ Hall and we are grateful for their attention to detail and friendly service.

Wishing all Drapers, their family and friends a peaceful and happy Christmas time.

Christine Holmes

Senior Warden
