The Death Of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll

On the very sad occasion of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll, The Master of the Shrewsbury Drapers Company, on behalf of all Freemen of the Company, sent a letter of condolence to His Majesty The King and to the Royal Family at this time of great sadness.

To mark the Proclamation of the King’s Accession to the throne The Master Brian Newman, Senior Warden Gaynor Bowen and Junior Warden Trevor Hunt attended a formal Accession Proclamation in Shrewsbury on Sunday 11th September 2022.

The reading of the Proclamation by the High Sheriff of Shropshire, Selina Graham, took place at the Bandstand in the Quarry at 1.00pm.  This was followed by a reading of the Proclamation by The Mayor, Councillor Elisabeth Roberts at Shrewsbury Castle at 13.45pm.

The Proclamation of a new Sovereign is a very old tradition which can be traced back over many centuries.

The ceremony does not create a new King.  It is simply an announcement of the accession which took place immediately on the death of the reigning Monarch.

This is one of the first occasions when communities have the opportunity to join together and reflect on the moment in our nation’s history when the reign of our longest -serving Monarch came to an end and our new Sovereign King Charles lll succeeded.
