80 Drapers, family and friends were enthralled by Chartered Surveyor Alistair Godfrey's talk -''The Dragon on the Hill''-  at University Centre, Shrewsbury on Saturday 12 January. As Historic England's project manager of the Flaxmill restoration he was able to talk about the the Flaxmill and the social history surrounding it, establish a tenuous Draper connection (!), describe the restoration work being undertaken and enthuse about its future. It does seem extraordinary that in Georgian times it was Shrewsbury and not London, or another large city, that produced the first iron frame, fire proof building in the world, the forerunner of the modern sky scraper. A wonderfull piece of history to celebrate.

The talk was followed by lunch and a raffle. Some £800 has been raised for Shrewsbury Drapers Company.
