Information & Key Dates

Monday 7th October - Saturday 12th October 2019

Competition Venue:     St Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Street, Shrewsbury, SY1 1EF

Key Dates:                      Monday 7th October: Take Entries to St Mary’s Church,

                                                                                  Shrewsbury between 12 and 2pm

                                          Tuesday 8th October : Adjudication

                                          Tuesday 8th October: 6.00 - 8pm - Awards & Presentations

                                                                               at St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury

                                           Wednesday 9th – Saturday 12th October: Public Exhibition

                                           Saturday 12th October 3 3.30pm – Collection of exhibits


Competition is open to:  Shropshire Students at Key Stage 3 & 4

Year 7 – Year 8 & 9 (combined) – Year 10 & 11 (combined)

Shropshire Schools, Academies, Free Schools & Colleges.  Maximum of 4 students per year groups, Maximum of 12 students per school, one entry per student in current year group.


Teachers are responsible for: Registering students, by Friday 20th September 2019

                                                     Selecting max 12 students from across the year groups

                                                     Delivering & collecting exhibits to/from St Mary’s Church on

                                                     allocated dates.

                                                     Attending Awards Reception with the students

 All entries must be submitted via the School & Teacher  (Direct individual entries will not be accepted)

Competition Requirements:       

Entrants for all year groups are to produce and submit a textile mixed media piece that should preferably include ‘wool’ somewhere in the design.

At Key Stage 3 –The competition is open to all pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9.  The entries should be divided and submitted as two separate groups of work, as there is a difference in skills development from younger to older students in the year groups.

Year 8 & 9 combined           Max 4 students

Schools can decide the theme, with each entry accompanied by a written explanation of the key concepts, processes, skills and links to the curriculum for each entry.

Key stage 3 – mixed media pieces (preferably to include wool somewhere) for years 7/8/9


At Key Stage 4 - Years 10 & 11 (combined- max 4 students) - The focus/theme can be taken from any of the GCSE specifications [Art and D&T]. Schools can decide the theme, accompanied by a written explanation of the key concepts, processes, skills and links to the curriculum for each entry.  Open to Years 10 & 11 combined.

Key stage 4 – Textile focus with criteria from GCSE specifications (preferably to include wool somewhere)


A Title and Brief Written Description of no more than 25 words should accompany each entry – no student names or school names to be shown on the front of an entry.  Teachers will need to advise organizers to whom each piece of work belongs to.

Exhibits should be ready for hanging or display with suitable hooks, wires and specific mounting instructions if necessary. 


Criteria for Marking & Adjudication: This will be based on the overall standard of the work, complexity and quality of the techniques and processes employed linked to the age range and individual response and originality of the work.

Entries must be accessible for judging i.e. not in glass frames etc. Mannequins/stands may be used for displaying an entry (please note you will need to supply these).  No larger than A3 if on Boards for display.


Criteria for marking will include::  

 Quality of Process & Technique 

Technical Skills and Standard of work (Neatness – Sewing Embellishments such as Beading/Appliqué etc).

2D or 3D

Complexity & Originality & Individual Response


Maximum Entries: 12 entries per School across the three year groups


Individual Prizes:  Year 7                 Gold £30            Silver £20                Bronze £15

                                 Year 8 & 9             Gold £40             Silver £30                Bronze £20        

                                 Year 10 & 11         Gold £50             Silver £40               Bronze £30       

Adjudicators:   Are selected from a pool of external adjudicators, marking against agreed set of criteria.


Awards & Presentation on  Tuesday 8th October 6.00pm – 8pm at St Mary’s Church,Shrewsbury SY1 1EF

Evening by Invitation:                       

Student Entrants may bring Max 2 guests

Teachers are invited to the Awards and Presentation Evening.

Prizes will be awarded to winning students on this evening.

Refreshments are included. 


Other invited Guests may include:  The High Sheriff of Shropshire, Local Mayors, Press, Drapers.


Public Exhibition of work:    Wednesday 9thSaturday 12th October 10.00 – 4 pm

The students work will be exhibited at St Mary’s Church with Drapers Company members as stewards.  The Exhibition is open to the public to view and students are encouraged to come along.

A people’s choice survey will run throughout the exhibition.

An Opportunity for students to display their work through the exhibition

Opportunity to perhaps volunteer for The Drapers as part of Community/Duke of Edinburgh style awards etc.

We regret that neither The Drapers Company nor St Mary’s Church can be held liable for any loss or damage to items whilst at St Mary’s.  There will be stewards throughout the public exhibition.

The Drapers Company reserve the right to make photographic records of the entries, and these may be used in publicity, on the website or promotion of their Textile Design Competitions. It is taken that permission is given unless the School advise otherwise.
